AP FRENCH LANGUAGE
Grades 11, 12 Advanced Placement Course
Prerequisite: None.
Students who enroll in this course should already have a good command of French grammar and vocabulary and have competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. This course emphasizes the use of language for active communication and help students develop the ability to understand spoken French in various contexts; a French vocabulary sufficiently ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles, literary tests, and other non-technical writings without dependence on a dictionary; and the ability to express themselves coherently, resourcefully, and with reasonable fluency and accuracy in both written and spoken French. This course seeks to develop language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) that can be used in various activities and disciplines rather than to cover any specific body of subject matter. AP FRENCH LITERATURE
Grades 11, 12 Advanced Placement Course
Prerequisite: None.
This course is designed to introduce students who have advanced language skills to the formal study of a representative body of literary texts in French. The objectives of this course are: proficiency in the fundamental language skills that enable the students to read and understand prose and verse of moderate difficulty and mature content, as well as to formulate and express critical opinions and judgments in correct and written French and the ability to read and analyze critically and to discuss perceptively representative works of French literature. AP JAPANESE & CULTURE
Grades 11, 12 Advanced Placement Course
Prerequisite: None.
This course will be comparable to a college/university Japanese level course for students who have completed approximately 300 hours of college-level classroom language instruction. Students will further their skills in productive, receptive and cultural skills required to communicate with native Japanese speakers. Based on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines, students are expected to reach the Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid Range. AP SPANISH LANGUAGE

Prerequisite: Grade of “B” or better in Spanish 4.
In this course Hispanic history, civilization, culture, and literature are studies with all communication conducted in Spanish. Students will develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions will also be an integral part of the course. This course will prepare students to: comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish; acquire vocabulary and grasp its structure in order to allow the easy, accurate reading of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as of modern literature in Spanish; compose expository passages; and express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency. AP SPANISH LITERATURE
Grades 10, 11, 12 Advanced Placement Course
Prerequisite: Grade of “B” or better in AP Spanish Language or Spanish for Native Speakers II.
This course is designed to cover selected works from the literature of Spain and Spanish America. These literary selections are required by the College Board and will prepare students for the AP Spanish Literature. Students will read and analyze the literature orally and in writing in Spanish. This course will prepare students to: understand a lecture in Spanish and to participate actively in discussions on literacy topics in Spanish; do a close reading of literary texts of all genres in Spanish; and analyze critically the form and content of literary works (including poetry) orally and in writing using appropriate terminology. This course will offer students the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the German language, literature, and culture. Students will be exposed to college level readings of cultural and historical relevance. Each semester a project shall be submitted in German which pertains to some aspect of Germanic culture. JAPANESE I P
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Basic aptitude in English.
This course is designed for students who are interested in learning Japanese as a second language. It will also introduce students to a non-western culture. The focus will be reading, writing, speaking and listening to basic Japanese. This will include the two Japanese syllabifies: katakana and hiragana; the Chinese pictographs; kanji, and the western-style alphabet; romaji. Students will learn basic vocabulary topics, such as days of the week, numbers, family relationships, and commonly used expressions. Students will learn the difference between Japanese and English syntax, as well as the conjugation of common Japanese verbs. This course meets UC/CSU “e” requirements for Foreign Language. MEHS
JAPANESE II P

Prerequisite: Japanese I P or equivalent.
This course is a continuation of Japanese I P. It is designed for students who are interested in learning Japanese as a second language. It will also introduce students to a non-western culture. The focus will be reading, writing, speaking and listening to basic Japanese. This will include the two Japanese syllabifies: katakana and hiragana; and the Chinese pictographs: kanji. Students will learn basic vocabulary pertaining to such topics as weather, hobbies and skills, and giving and receiving directions. Students will practice vocabulary and phrases in conversation. Students will build on their knowledge of verbs and verb tenses. This course meets UC/CSU “e” requirements for Foreign Language. MEHS
JAPANESE III P

Prerequisite: Japanese I P and Japanese II P.
This course is a continuation of Japanese II P. It is designed for students who are interested in learning Japanese as a second language. It will also introduce students to a non-western culture. The focus will be reading, speaking, listening, and writing basic Japanese. This will include the Chinese pictographs: kanji. Students will learn basic vocabulary pertaining to comparison of two or more items, transitive and intransitive verbs, and verbs of giving and receiving. Students will also learn the Japanese use of honorifics: rules for expressing deference to others in the familial and social hierarchy of Japanese culture. Students will also read stories and essays in the target language. Students will continue to advance their writing skills in composition. This course meets UC/CSU “e” requirements for Foreign Language. MEHS
JAPANESE III H
Grades 11, 12 Honors Course
Prerequisite: Japanese I, Japanese II, and teacher’s permission.
In addition to fulfilling the requirements for Japanese II and Japanese IV, Honor’s students will complete additional assignments designated as an Honor’s curriculum. It is designed for students who are interested in learning Japanese as a second language. The focus will be reading, speaking, listening, and writing intermediate Japanese above the level required for regular Japanese III and Japanese IV students. This will include the Chinese pictographs: kanji. Students will learn intermediate vocabulary and grammar pertaining to Japanese history and literature. Students will continue to learn the Japanese use of honorifics. Students will also read stories and essays above the level of their peers in the regular Japanese III and Japanese IV classes in the target language. Students will continue to advance their writing skills in composition above and beyond that required for the regular Japanese II and Japanese IV classes. Prerequisite: Japanese I, Japanese II, and Japanese III.
This is the fourth course in the Japanese language sequence. It is designed for students who are interested in learning Japanese as a second language. It will also introduce students to a non-western culture. The focus will be reading, speaking, listening, and writing intermediate Japanese. This will include the Chinese pictographs: kanji. Students will learn intermediate vocabulary and grammar pertaining to shopping, discussing future plans, visiting Japanese homes, and part-time employment. Students will continue to learn the Japanese use of honorifics: rules for expressing deference to others in the familial and social hierarchy of Japanese culture. Students will also read stories and essays in the target language.
